Where I’m coming from

I’m John, and I’m a yoga teacher in NYC. I grew up in South Jersey—just outside of Philadelphia—and I’m a big fan of the 76ers.

I’ve worked as a university writing tutor, research and teaching assistant, editor, proofreader, and copywriter. (Copywriting is my “day job.”) I completed a 200-hour teacher training under the expert guidance of Julie Dohrman, and followed it up with an additional 200-hour Katonah Yoga® teaching certification in which my primary instructors were Cari Friedman and Abbie Galvin. I also completed a mentorship via the Katonah Yoga Center under Kari Harendorf, Willis Johnston, Kyle Miller, Josie Schweitzer, and Katonah Yoga founder Nevine Michaan.

When teaching, I draw on my background in literary analysis and writing. I love having the opportunity to bring together rich, metaphorical language with practical, bio-mechanically sound movement principles. I believe pretty much every single person could benefit from a regular yoga practice, and I strive to offer students a safe and supportive environment in which to explore the poses and their breaths.

Be sure to reach out if you’re interested in private, semi-private, or corporate lessons in person or online—or you want updates on when and where I’m teaching classes in a studio or in Prospect Park.

About Katonah Yoga®
Katonah Yoga® is a syncretic Hatha yoga practice developed by Nevine Michaan over 40 years. It includes classical Hatha yoga, Taoism, geometry, and imagination in a practical framework designed to potentiate well-being. In an effort to map time and personal space, the practice aims to identify habitual movement patterns, uses metaphor to inform movement and breath, and invites practitioners to measure themselves with their own bodies and with yoga props.
